The term 'Waler' was a term coined in Caluctta in 1846 by the British to describe the horses imported from New South Wales to India.
October 31st, 1917, marks the epic event that the Waler today is most famous for; when two regiments of Australian Light Horsemen, the 4th, Victorians, and the 12th, from New South Wales, charged the Turkish defences of Beersheba, Palestine, in a last attempt to save the British from a disastrous defeat.
"... there is no doubt that these hardy Australian horses make the finest cavalry mounts in the world... Their records in this war place them far above the cavalry of any other nation."
- Lt Col R.M.P Preston
"The early Australian remounts received mixed reviews, including strong criticism, from the British officers. And yet, by the close of World War I, Walers were recognised as among the greatest battle horses ever bred"
- Fiona Carruthers, The Horse in Australia
"Australia, a country of contrasts and extremes, has produced some of the finest horses on record since they first stepped onto its shores... It's first, and arguably greatest horse breed, the Waler, is, however, now one of the least known beyond it's shores"
- Tamsin Pickeral, The Majesty of the Horse
